The Art of the Wild Pee

Needing a wee outdoors is unavoidable if you spend time walking, climbing, or adventuring. And while men have it easy, for women it can feel like a logistical challenge. But once you’ve cracked it, the wild pee is surprisingly liberating!

1. Find Your Spot
Look for cover-rocks, bushes, or a dip in the path. Think about your group’s line of sight and, importantly, which way the wind is blowing. A little planning goes a long way.

2. Master the Squat
I’ll admit it: I tried a Shewee and it just didn’t work for me (despite multiple practice runs in the shower). So I say-embrace the squat! Keep your feet wide, heels down if you can, and get as low to the ground as you can to avoid splash-back. Walking poles can even double up as stabilisers!

3. Practice with Your Kit
Some outdoor outfits are more “pee friendly” than others. Honestly, practise getting your bum out at home in your kit so you know what works. A game-changer in winter is trousers with side zips-you can whip your bum out quickly without freezing.

4. Pack It Out
I always carry tissues or loo roll and a couple of dog poo bags. Everything goes in the bag-yes, even the paper-tied up and taken home. Simple, discreet, and no trace left behind.

5. Embrace the Freedom
It might feel awkward at first, but the wild pee is part of being outdoors. Once you stop worrying and get comfortable with it, it’s genuinely freeing. You’ll wonder why you ever stressed about it!

If you have kids, I would really recommend getting them used to it too! We always tell our little ones to cover up, so it can be embarrassing and a bit weird for them, but the sooner you start, the easier it'll be when you're taking them out on big adventures too!
