Surf Cascais - October 2024

Portugal & Pastel de Nata

In October 2024 I treated myself to something I’d wanted to do for ages, a surf trip abroad! After a friend's recommendation, I decided to go to Portugal, with Surf Cascais. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but it turned out to be one of the most fun, inspiring and energising weeks I’ve had in years.

Lisbon First

I arrived a day early and spent it exploring Lisbon on my own. I jumped on a tram, wandered the streets, and soaked up the tiled buildings and atmosphere. I stopped for more than a few pastel de nata, because when in Lisbon you have to. By the time I hopped on the train, which snaked around the beautiful coastline to Cascais, I was already in holiday mode. The train ride itself was dreamy, and from there a quick Uber had me at the villa ready to start the week.

A Halloween Welcome

The trip began with a big family-style meal and then a Halloween party. It was the perfect way to break the ice, and any nerves about travelling solo disappeared straight away. Everyone was in the same boat - excited, a little unsure, but ready to surf - and that made it easy to settle in and feel part of the group.

Surf Lessons Worth the Trip

I’ve been surfing on and off for about 15 years, which basically means I’ve picked up plenty of bad habits. The instructors were fantastic, patient but also ruthless in the best way. They broke my technique down, rebuilt it step by step, and gave me a whole new way of thinking about surfing. It was tough at times but also rewarding, with every session bringing something to celebrate.

Yoga, Breakfasts, and Pool Time

The trip wasn’t all about surfing. Yoga sessions were exactly what I needed after hours in the water, stretching everything out and giving some calm back to the day. The breakfasts were brilliant too, fresh with a great selection every morning, and the villa itself had such a good vibe - poolside chats, lazy afternoons, and a café down the road when I fancied another pastel de nata.

Friends and Inspiration

By the end of the week I’d made friends from all over Europe, the kind of people I know I’ll keep in touch with. Surf Cascais wasn’t just about improving my surfing, it was about getting out of my comfort zone, traveling on my own and meeting new people.

I left already planning my return trip. That says it all really. If you’re thinking about a surf camp, especially if you’re going solo, I can’t recommend it enough.
